Beste gitaar en mandoline vrienden, Via deze weg willen wij U graag uitnodigen voor een aantal interessante concerten op vrijdag 4 en zaterdag 5 juli. Het 1ste concert wordt geheel verzorgd door een van de bekendste Mandoline Orkesten uit de Verenigde Staten; het Providence Mandolin Orchestra o.l.v. Mark M. Davis. Zij zullen een interessant programma uitvoeren met een aantal (Europese) premières zoals bv. het 'A Lament for the Death of Polite Language' van Robert Schulz; het 'Movement I' van Francine Trester en het werk 'Gretel Dreaming: A Song Cycle' van Owen Hartford, een compositie waarin de soliste Rachel Panitch de vioolsolo zal vertolkenen. Al met al belooft dit concert, waarin ook de mandolinist Joshua Bell als solist te horen zal zijn, een zeer bijzondere aangelegenheid te worden. Het concert vind plaats op vrijdag 4 juli in een van Kampen's mooiste concert plaatsen; de BUITENKERK, Buiten Nieuwstraat 101 te Kampen. Het begint om 20.00 uur en de toegang bedraagt 5 euro. Voor kinderen tot 12 jaar bedraagt de toegangsprijs 1 euro (zie het affiche in het attachment). Het 2e concert betreft een optreden van de mandolinist Sebastiaan de Grebber en de pianiste Eva van den Dool. Dit gratis concert vindt plaats op zaterdag 5 juli in De MUZERIE Centrum voor de Kunsten, Goudsteeg 19 te Zwolle en begint om 15.00 uur. Het duo voert werken uit van o.a. Raffaele Calace, John Craton (première) en Victor Kioulaphides. Een 'must' vooral voor diegenen die benieuwd zijn naar de combinatie mandoline met piano en de composities van Raffaele Calace en zijn hedendaagse collega's willen leren kennen in hun originele bezetting.
Het 3e en laatste concert staat gepland voor zaterdagavond 5 juli, aanvan 20.00 uur in de ZUIDERKERK, Zuiderkerkstraat 31 te Zwolle (op ongeveer 5 minuten loopafstand van het NS-station). Hier zullen twee orkesten, te weten het Providence Mandolin Orchestra o.l.v Mark M. Davis en HET CONSORT o.l.v. Alex Timmerman, voor u optreden. Eerst afzonderlijk om daarna in het derde gedeelte gezamenlijk 'Acte de Présence' te geven.
Het Providence Mandolin Orchestra zal o.a. composities uitvoeren van o.a. Mark. M. Davis, Owen Hartford en Queen. Medewerking wordt ook hier weer verleend door de violiste Rachel Panitch en door de de mandolinist Joshua Bell die in de 'Cinco Piezas', een concert suite van Luis Gianneo (1897-1968), de concerterende mandoline partij voor zijn rekening neemt.
Op het programma onderdeel van HET CONSORT staan composities van o.a. Heitor Villa-Lobos, Victor Kioulaphides en John Craton. Van laatstgenoemde wordt het speciaal voor deze gelegenheid gecomponeerde Dubbelconcert 'Flowers of Spain' (Bloemen van Spanje) voor twee Gitaren en Orkest uitgevoerd. De gitaar solisten in dit werk zijn het bekende Amerikaanse gitaarduo Mark en Beverly Davis. Zij zullen samen met HET CONSORT de première van dit nieuwe concert in de aanwezigheid van de componist, verzorgen.
Tijdens dit onderdeel van het concert zal ook de nieuwe CD 'MUSIC FOR MANDOLIN ORCHESTRA' van HET CONSORT gepresenteerd worden. Op deze CD waarop louter origineel werk voor mandolineorkest te beluisteren is, zijn naast composities uit de eerste helft van de 20ste eeuw van de Italiaanse componisten Calace, Manente en Cappelletti, maar liefst vier 'first recordings' opgenomen. Drie ervan, te weten het 'CONCERTO per orchestra a pizzico' van de Grieks-Amerikaanse componist Victor Kioulaphides, de 'The Legend of Princess Noccalula' for Mandolin and Orchestra van de Amerikaanse componist John Craton (mandoline solist: Sebastiaan de Grebber) en het 'Perpetua Melomania II' van de Nederlandse componist Jeff Hijlkema, zijn composities opgedragen aan HET CONSORT.
In het gezamenlijke gedeelte, waarin beide orkesten als een groot orkest zullen optreden, zullen o.a. werken van Betty Beath, Jurriaan Andriessen en Raffaele Calace ten gehore worden gebracht.
Dit samenwerkings project van HET CONSORT en Het Providence Mandolin Orchestra èn de concerten zijn mogelijk gemaakt door het NEDERLANDS FONDS VOOR DE PODIUMKUNSTEN, het Prins Bernhard Cultuurfonds geef cultuur een kans, De Muzerie - Centrum voor de Kunsten te Zwolle en de Stichting HET CONSORT. Wij hopen veel mandoline en gitaarliefhebbers op deze concerten te mogen begroeten! |

ZATERDAG 6 oktober: aanvang 15.00 uur: Meppel, Grote Kerk, Hoofdstraat 52 – Middagconcert door het Gitaar en Mandoline Kamer Orkest Het CONSORT o.l.v. Alex Timmerman met gastoptredens van de bekende Scandinavische mandolinisten Tove Flensborg uit Kopenhagen en Reidar Edvardsen uit Oslo .Zaterdagmiddag zal het Gitaar en Mandoline Kamer Orkest Het CONSORT een concert verzorgen in de Grote Kerk te Meppel. Het CONSORT, net terug van zeer succesvolle concerten in Amerika (o.a in Manhattan, New York), heeft zich ten doel gesteld om een volwaardige plaats op het (inter)nationale concertpodium voor het mandolineorkest als zodanig te creëren. Met dit voor ogen en met goed samengestelde muziekprogramma’s gaf Het CONSORT in haar 17-jarige bestaan reeds vele concerten in binnen en buitenland. Meerdere malen behaalde Het CONSORT de hoogste prijzen tijdens Internationale concoursen en staat het bekend als een van de meest toonaangevende mandoline orkesten in Europa. Voorbeelden hiervan zijn onder andere de eerste prijzen behaald in 1996 en 1999 tijdens het E.G.T.A (European Guitar Teachers Association, afd. Nederland) concours te Tilburg en de tweede prijs tijdens het ‘Internationaler Orchestrerwettbewerb 2003’ te Koslar in Duitsland. Een ander voorbeeld van waardering voor de baanbrekende activiteiten en de concerten van Het CONSORT is de ‘Honorary Award’, een eervolle onderscheiding die het orkest tijdens hun Italiaanse tournee in 2003 van de Comunita Montana "Valle Del Liri" (Lazio-Italië) mocht ontvangen. Deze eervolle Italiaanse onderscheiding werd het orkest in het bijzonder toegekend vanwege de vele concerten in Europa door hen gegeven, het onder de aandacht brengen van de Romeinse "Embergher’ mandoline en hun inzet om componisten er toe aan te zetten nieuwe composities voor mandolineorkest te componeren. Voor het concert in de Grote Kerk te Meppel staan origineel voor mandolineorkest gecomponeerde composities op het programma. Zo zal er o.a. het ‘Concerto a Strumenti’ van de Napolitaanse mandoline virtuoos en componist Raffaele Calace (1863-1934) en het ‘Concerto per Orchestra a Pizzico’ van de Grieks-Amerikaanse componist Victor Kioulaphides (1961) uitgevoerd worden. Daarnaast is het orkest te beluisteren in een tweetal composities voor orkest èn solist(en); voor de pauze wordt Het CONSORT uitgebreid met Tove Flensborg uit Kopenhagen en de in Oslo wonende Reidar Edvardsen, twee bekende mandolinisten uit Scandinavië. Zij zijn speciaal voor dit concert naar Nederland afgereisd en zullen als gast solisten samen met Het CONSORT de ‘Suite No. 3 voor mandoline, altmandoline en orkest’ van de Zweedse componist Kurt Atterberg (1877-1974) ten gehore brengen. Na de pauze zal de jonge Nederlandse mandolinist Sebastiaan de Grebber de solo partij van de ´Legend of Princess Noccalula´ van de Amerikaanse componist John Craton, vertolken. Dit werk is, evenals als het ´Concerto per Orchestra a pizzico´ van de in New York woonachtige Griekse componist Victor Kioulaphides gecomponeerd voor en opgedragen aan HET CONSORT. Het afwisselende programma zal worden afgesloten met Griekse klanken uit de ‘Suite Greca’ van de Italiaanse componist Luca Mereu (1963). U bent allen van harte welkom!

Saturday – July 21st 2007 – PROVIDENCE (RI): Evening concert in the St. Martin's Church, 50 Orchard Avenue, Providence, RI on Saturday evening, July 21, 2007 by the PROVIDENCE MANDOLIN ORCHESTRA conducted by M. M. Davis and the Mandolin Chamber Orchestra HET CONSORT conducted by Alex Timmerman.
This special concert is set up as a three part musical event; in the 1st part The PMO will perform compositions by Fran Trester and Clarice Assad while in the 2nd part Het CONSORT will present music composed by Luca Mereu, John Craton and Raffaele Calace. Scheduled for the last part both orchestras will be joint together to perform i.e. Victor Kioulaphides’ composition ‘Concerto per Orchestra a Pizzico’, the ‘Canzone No. I’ by Jurriaan Andriessen and Owen Hartford’s latest composition ‘Latin Sketches’ for mandolin Orchestra.

Sunday – July 22nd 2007 – JAMESTOWN (RI): Evening concert in The Jamestown Philomenian Library, 26 North Road, Jamestown, RI 02835 by the Dutch Mandolin Chamber Orchestra HET CONSORT conducted by Alex Timmerman.
Programmed for this concert are compositions for mandolin orchestra by i.e. Raffaele Calace, Karl Jenkins, John Craton, Victor Kioulaphides and Jeff Hijlkema. The latter’s "Perpetuo Melomania" is a brand-new and interesting Dutch composition composed for Het CONSORT. The work is written in the Minimal Music style close to that of the American pioneers of this genre, Philip Glass, Steve Reich and Terry Reily. Their "minimalism" in music met world-wide recognition and inspired many composers around the globe to compose in this style. Although repetition and replay are unmistakable main characteristics of his "Perpetuo Melomania", Jeff Hijlkema uses harmonies and melody layers for his ‘on-going melody’ that are more related to the Pop music of today.
This is a concert of the Philomenian Public Library Music Series and starts at 7:00 p.m. Free to public.

Mandoline Piano Duo wint 1e prijs
MANDOLINE PIANO DUO wint 1e prijs tijdens het Amsterdam UITMARKT Kamermuziek Concours.
AMSTERDAM - De 1e prijs van het Amsterdam UITMARKT Kamermuziek Concours 2006, dat plaats vond op 26 en 27 augustus, is gewonnen door het Mandoline Piano Duo Sebastiaan de Grebber en Sarah Beernink.
Een gedeelde 2e prijs werd toegekend aan Nora van der Stelt, een 17-jarige violiste met haar vader als begeleider aan de piano en aan het ‘Duo Rinascente’ bestaande uit Helbertine Hylkema uit België op viool en de Argentijnse Lorena Mainero op piano.
Het Amsterdam UITMARKT Kamermuziek Concours, dat de laatste jaren plaatsvindt in de Amvest concertzaal van de Beurs van Berlage te Amsterdam, staat open voor alle denkbare combinaties van klassieke instrumenten. Ook dit jaar bleek dat deze ruime opzet door de talrijke luisteraars, zeer gewaardeerd werd. Door maar liefst 12 verschillende ensembles in diverse samenstellingen werd er eveneens op gitaar, harp, strijk- en blaas instrumenten, op hoog niveau gemusiceerd.
Tijdens de finale onderscheidden Sarah Beernink en Sebastiaan de Grebber zich van de andere ensembles door hun uitstekend samenspel, zichtbaar musiceer plezier en originele repertoire keuze in de vertolking van het 2e Mandoline Concert van Raffaele Calace, de Sonatina Triematica van Luciano Chailly en de Rhapsody van Victor Kioulaphides. Het unieke van deze combinatie heeft het publiek, dat het duo de publieksprijs toekende, aangenaam verrast. Iets wat in het juryrapport nog eens extra benadrukt werd door de volgende zinsnede: ‘…verfrissend en opvallend goed op elkaar ingespeeld…’.
Met de toekenning van 1e prijs van het Amsterdam UITMARKT Kamer Muziek Concours aan het Mandoline Piano Duo mag het Nederlandse concertpubliek zich in de toekomst verheugen op interessante en enerverende concerten van een bijzonder duo.
Felicitaties aan Sarah en Sebastiaan en veel succes toegewenst in de toekomst!

The programme includes compositions by Johann Sebastiaan Bach, Raffaele Calace and Victor Kioulaphides. A special item will be Georg Friedrich Händel’s famous Harp Concerto performed by the Dutch Harpist Annegreet Rouw (photo). Programmed also is a new original work dedicated to HET CONSORT for mandolin solo and mandolin orchestra by the American composer John Craton titled ‘THE LEGEND OF PRINSESS NOCCALULA’. Saturday - July 1th at 20.30 hours: ZWOLLE: Open-air evening concert by THE AMSTERDAM SYMPHONY ORCHESTRA conducted by Peter Sánta at the Rode Torenplein (Red Tower Square in Zwolle - Netherlands). Special guest is the young Dutch mandolinist Ferdinand Binnendijk This concert is a part of the Summer Festival The City as Theatre in Zwolle and has grown into one of the most sizable open-air productions in the Netherlands. Every year the concert opens with a more or less traditional and classic concert programme. By gradially adding other music- and art forms in the course of the evening it develops in a spectacular, multi disciplined music theatre production. The evening progamme of the open-air concert starts with Pelléas et Mélisande by Gabriel Fauré, the Mandolin Concerto No.1 composed by the American composer John Craton for solo Mandolin and String orchestra. Special guest in this work with orchestra is the 15 year old Dutch mandolinist Ferdinand Binnendijk. The first half ends with George Bizet´s 1st and 2nd Carmen Suites.
After the pause the programm will continue with Anton Dvorjak´s Largo (Aus der Neue Welt), Henk Meutgeert´s Ouverture Firiety, Richard Galliano´s Tango Pour Claude, Astor Piazolla´s Oblivion and Concierto para Quinteto, Duke Ellington´s Caravan and It don’t mean a thing if it ain’t got that swing and George Gershwin´s I loves you Porgy. The concert will be concluded with the Finale De Stad Als Theater, a work by the well-known Dutch composer Henk Meutgeert.

ZWOLLE - Evening ´Talent Concert´: The Orkest van het Oosten (The Orchestra of the East) conducted by Candida Thompson with Ferdinand Binnendijk (mandolin) in the concerthall of the Nieuwe Buitensociëteit in Zwolle (Netherlands). This concert is a special initiative of the Orkest van het Oosten that aims to bring young musical talent under the attention of a broad music loving public. Three young music students were selected from a large group of competitors by the jury of the Orchestra, as being talents on their instruments. All the participants, studying music at music schools or with private teachers in the Dutch province of Overijssel, had to play a programme of about 20 minutes of their own choice and convince the jury of their capability to perform well on stage. As a reward the chosen finalists are offered the change to play during the so-called ´Talent Concert´ of the Orkest van het Oosten on the 15th of June this year. This time the chosen talents are Alain Pondman on Saxophone, the Violinist Martine Stigt Thans and the Mandolinist Ferdinand Binnendijk. Programmed, among other works, is the Mandolin Concerto No.1 in d-minor composed by the American composer John Craton for solo Mandolin and String orchestra. Ferdinand Binnendijk, a 15 year old promising young Mandolinist who studies the Mandolin with Alex Timmerman at the Center of Art Education ´De MUZERIE´ in Zwolle, will première this nearly 20 minutes three movement Concerto with the Orkest van het Oosten. SATURDAY - June 10th at 20.00 hours: The Hague – An evening concert by the Mandolin Chamber Orchestra HET CONSORT conducted by Alex Timmerman in the Elandstraatchurch, Elandstraat 194 in the centre of The Hague (Netherlands). During the concert compositions will be performed that cover almost all musical periods. The first part features arrangements of music by Johann Sebastian Bach, Georg Friedrich Händel (Baroque) and Gioacchino Antonio Rossini (Classical) as well as original works for mandolin orchestra by Raffaele Calace (Neo Romantisism) and Yasuo Kuwahara (Contemporary). The soloist of the first part of the programme will be the Dutch Harpist ANNEGREET ROUW in the famous Harp Concerto by Georg F. Händel. After the interval the programme continues with original works for mandolin orchestra by Contemporary composers. Friday March 24th: KAMPEN – Evening concert at the concert-hall of the STEDELIJKE MUZIEKSCHOOL Kampen / QUINTUS – Center for Art education. This Consort mandolin promotion concert is part of the project ‘The Guitar in Ensemble playing’ of the guitar teachers of the QUINTUS – Center for Art education and was given by the Mandolin Chamber Orchestra HET CONSORT conducted by Alex Timmerman. As is indicated by the name of the project the role of the guitar in the larger ensembles/orchestras will be given special attention. During this exceptional concert the conductor - where necessary and interesting – gave explanations about the music part of the guitarists in the Orchestra. Interesting with regard to the program of the evening is that the compositions cover almost all musical periods, as there are works among others to be performed by Bach (Baroque), Rossini (Classical), Calace (Neo Romantisism), Kuwahara and Kioulaphides (Contemporary). A special program item was an appearance of the Dutch mandolin virtuoso SEBASTIAAN DE GREBBER accompanied by The CONSORT. |

The concert will feature performances of original Italian compositions for mandolin orchestra by i.e. Raffaele Calace, Arrigio Cappelletti and Luca Mereu as well as contemporary music by Greek, Dutch and American composers like Victor Kioulaphides, Jeff Hijlkema (world première) and John Craton. Scheduled to be performed during this concert are two works that deserve special attention. For the "Perpetuo Melomania", composed for mandolin orchestra by the Dutch composer Jeff Hijlkema, will receive its first performance in the US while the composition "The Legend of Princess Noccalula" for solo mandolin and mandolin orchestra by the American composer John Craton will receive its US première by Het CONSORT, the orchestra to which the work was dedicated. The soloist in this composition is the orchestra’s concertmaster, the Dutch mandolinist Sebastiaan de Grebber.
The concert starts at 8:00 p.m. Entrance: $15 ($10 seniors/students).
