Hendrik van den Broek

Hendrik van den Broek is a gifted guitar and mandolin maker and specialized in the restoration and conservation of historical stringed instruments. He is regarded as one of the leading figures in the field and often consulted to valuate, identify and appraise antique stringed instruments. Many original mandolins and guitars, owned by musicians (performers as well as teachers), musicologists and collectors of musical instruments, he either restored to playable condition or conserved for display purposes.
Van den Broek restored a great number of original antique mandolins built by well-known Italian makers like Giovanni Battista Fabricatore (Neapoli), Vincenzo Vinaccia (Neapoli), Antonio Monzino (Milano) and Giovanni De Santis (Roma). Through his research on the instruments made by the famous Calace family and the Roman master luthier Luigi Embergher, he can be seen as one of few who are able to restore these instruments as close to the original examples as possible.

In the past Van den Broek restored many original guitars from the 18th and 19th Century made by famous makers like Juan Perfumo (Madrid), Antonio de Lorca (Malaga), Gennaro Fabricatore (Neapoli), Francois Lacôte (Paris), the Italian brothers Joseph and Louis Panormo (London) and Johann Georg Stauffer and Johann Anton Stauffer (Vienna). His restoration work also includes 20th Century Classical guitars built by Manuel Ramirez (Madrid), Luigi Mozzani (Cento), and Lucien Gelas (Paris) and later examples like modern Classical guitars built by for instance Marcelino Lopez (Madrid) and Nico van der Waals (Amsterdam).
His specialized knowledge about (early) technology and techniques of guitar and mandolin construction, woods, glues and varnishes, enables him to make his own exact copies of antique guitars and mandolins. Because of his excellent craftsmanship and a fine ear for sound quality there is a growing demand for Hendrik van den Broek´s own built guitars and mandolins.
