Samples - Bach
When Bach moved to Lünenburg to study at the Michaëlschool he became associated with the famous organist Georg Böhm. In this period he intensively studied the old masters of polyphony and was first introduced in the music composed by French composers like Michelle Corrette and François Couperin. After his studies he moved to Weimar where he first was appointed as a violinist and - somewhat later - as an organist at the court of the Duke Johann Ernst, a function Bach also held at Arnstadt, a place 30 kilometres from Weimar. Here he wrote his first organ and harpsichord works. Pieces that later would prove to be the starting point of an immense and wonderful oeuvre of more that 1000 compositions! Recent publications have shown that the assumption that Bach wrote his Brandenburg Concertos for the Margrave of Brandenburg has been wrong. Bach selected and compiled the six Brandenburg Concertos from music that had already been played by the orchestra of Prince Leopold at Cöthen. They were presented and dedicated to the Margrave of Brandenburg in 1721. The Brandenburg Concertos were, however never played by the Margrave´s orchestra, found - neglected for years - in his library. The Brandenburg Concerto No. 3 in G major BWV 1048 is, like the 6th Concerto, originally scored for strings and continuo. In the arrangement for Mandolin Chamber Orchestra the original violin parts are divided in three groups of mandolins (one first, two seconds and two third mandolins). The two mandolas and one guitar are set for the three viola parts, while the other two guitars and the mandoloncello take care of the three cello parts and continuo line. Because the lowest instrument of the cello part is described as “Violono grosso” the Chitarrone moderno (a large guitar-like plucked bass) is added. Unlike often is heard, this arrangement does not include a slow movement that is “borrowed” from for instance one of Bach’s violin sonatas. It only gives a short solo cadenza to the first mandolinist and supporting tremolo chords to the other instrumentalists of the orchestra. © Alex Timmerman. Het bestellen van onze CD:
