Guitar and Mandoline Orchestra

Samples - Jorge Cardoso

Jorge Cardoso (1949)
12 Milonga

The Argentinian guitar player and composer Jorge Cardoso (1949) was born in Posadas. He can be considered a musician with a wide range of talents; he gives concerts and masterclasses all over the world and made many CDs as a concert player. He wrote more than 270 compositions in most of which the guitar playes an important role. Besides works for one or more guitars or guitar combined with other instruments, he wote quartets, quintets and concertos for guitar and orchestra. Cardoso also arranged music with folkloristic characteristics from different periods and wrote, among other books, 'Ciencia y Método de la Técnica Guitarrística' and 'Ritmos y Formas Musicales Sudamericanas.' His 'Milonga' is one of his most famous compositions. This work exists in a version for guitar solo as well as a version for guitar duo. The source of this dance form is not completely known. Like the tango, the milonga is associated with the circumstances of the South American immigrants. The musical interpretation of loneliness, homesickness and sadness in the pubs and brothels of Buenos Aires and Montevideo probably had to do with the origin of the music. The milonga is a tango with a playful character and an elegant rhythm. The arrangement on this CD, which was approved by Cardoso, audibly shows the multiple voices of the composition. It is a varied piece of music in which melancholy and nostalgia are combined with rhythmic power.
