Samples - Rossini
In 1815 Rossini went to Naples to become the musical and artistic director of the Teatro San Carlo. Here he created perhaps his best-known comedy Il barbiere di Siviglia (The Barber of Seville). The first performance of it was given on the 20th of February in 1816 at the Teatro Argentina in Rome, the city that had commissioned Rossini to write the work. The following years his fame was greatly celebrated in Italy and journeys to England and France were scheduled. In 1823 he accepted the directorship of the Théatre-Italien in Paris where he experienced an enormous popularity. His last opera Guillaume Tell was premiered there in 1829. Although he returned frequently to Italy Gioacchino Rossini died in Passy near Paris in 1868.
